About Twin Lakes Wildlife Area

Located near the town of Twin Lakes in Lake County, Colorado, the Twin Lakes Wildlife Area covers a mixture of wetlands, lakes, and riparian zones that support an abundance of wildlife. The area includes two natural glacial lakes—Twin Lakes—formed in the Sawatch Mountain range, providing a critical habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, and other wetland species. The surrounding habitat is composed of montane forests and meadows that sustain deer, elk, and a variety of smaller mammals. Historically, the area has been important for both indigenous peoples and later settlers for fishing and hunting. Recreationally, visitors come to Twin Lakes Wildlife Area primarily for birdwatching, fishing, canoeing, and photography. The adjacent Twin Lakes reservoir is a popular fishing destination known for trout species. Trails and seasonal access points allow for quiet exploration of the wetlands and shoreline. The scenery includes views of the Collegiate Peaks to the east and the open skies above the lakes offer excellent sunrise and sunset vistas. The wildlife area's serene environment appeals to nature lovers seeking to experience Colorado's aquatic and forest ecosystems without the crowds typical of larger parks.
